Scarves with Attitude

Here’s another delayed review. This time I’m trying on three different SixteenR scarves (check out their website here and their Facebook page here). Not only do their hijabs come in fun and different designs not to be found anywhere else on the market, the company is also built around a unique philosophy of empowerment and strength. Did I mention that SixteenR’s founder and designer, Nancy Hoque is a sweetheart who is involved in about every other creative Muslim project you will find out there, masha’ Allah?! I was lucky enough to get to spend some time with her during Fashion Fighting Famine in California some time back. Enough about that; let’s get down to business.

The favorite. What’s not to love about this multicolored lightweight hijab with Arabic calligraphy? I’ve already worn the El Seed-designed The Centuries scarf on stage as a turban while performing in the Hijabi Monologues, and it is bound to be worn again and again.

The fly one. I love the print of this El Seed-designed orange pashmina shawl. Since The Walls is a little narrow to do my regular scarf style with, I prefer to wear it as a turban or around my neck as seen in the picture (I think it looks cooler that way).

The conscious one. Although the Little Ripples scarf is my least favorite when it comes to the print (the organization’s logo), the size is better in my opinion (i.e. wider) than the other two. The best thing about this sturdy but soft light purple on deep purple pashmina hijab is that every scarf sold means one donated to Darfuri refugee teachers.

Hijab Fest!

Shoes and purses are nice enough, but it is difficult for a hijabi to ever have too many scarves. Obviously then, when the girls behind Imaan & Beauty offered me to try out some new scarves for the spring, I was really excited to do so. Picking out a few from their many bold hijabs was not an easy thing; there are just too many fun prints to choose from. I ended up selecting the Sweet Mulan, Aztec Tassel, Safari Spring, and Baroque Red; all of them maxi scarves. I was also sent some cute bracelets and really smart magnetic hijab pins – Pinjabs – that don’t mess up your scarves when you use them. I hope to feature them in another review soon.

The above picture illustrates how the colors look like in daylight. They’re just really pretty, and the materials are breezy and easy to work with. Maxi scarves are also perfect if you want a more voluminized look. Below you’ll find pictures and direct links to all four. Although I loved them all, Sweet Mulan and Safari Spring are my favorites.

Sweet Mulan is my ultimate favorite among the four scarves. The gorgeous oriental floral print and silky smooth texture is right on point for the spring. Get the Imaan & Beauty Sweet Mulan scarf here.

The best part about this tribal print scarf are the four tassels on each end. Super cute! Get the Imaan & Beauty Aztec Tassel scarf here

Imaanandbeauty2

This lightweight, huge scarf is perfect for volume. The print is superb, although I find it a little hard to incorporate in an outfit. Get the Imaan & Beauty Baroque Red scarf here

Imaanandbeauty4

Another favorite of mine, this scarf is big, bold, and beautiful. I love the playful look the different prints and colors create. Get the Imaan & Beauty Safari Spring scarf here

The Skirt (Hijab-ista Review)

The solid-colored, flowy maxi skirt is a hijabi’s wardrobe staple if there ever was one. Versatile and modest as few other garments, it can worn to school or the grocery store, or dressed up for more formal occasions. So when the girls over at Hijab-ista suggested they’d send me their jersey high-waist maxi skirts alongside other products to try out, I was immediately down with the idea.

Not only do the skirts look really good; they’re the most comfortable things you’ll ever wear. Again, the material is light, pleated jersey, and the waist is elastic, making it difficult NOT to want to lounge around with them at ALL times. They also come in four different colors; I got sent the green and the grey. I had originally thought I would need a medium, but given the elastic waist and the flowy shape of the garments, someone my size may opt for a size small.

Below are two casual but quite different ways I styled the skirts on two occasions. The pictures unfortunately do not serve them justice, but you can be sure they will show up in plenty of other OOTDs moving forward as I simply love their appearance and feel. In the second set of pictures I’m wearing a gorgeous Hijab-ista scarf as well, which I will be reviewing alongside other scarves in a later post. It should be no secret, however, that I love it. Ice Ice Baby

So I’ve been extremely busy grading my first batch of papers (around 50) – good thing we have a short study break so I can catch my breath. Other than that, fall has kicked in here in Michigan – frost warnings and all – which apart from frozen noses and heating bills means more outerwear! I’m sure I’ll be less excited about this one month from now.
